TIMELINE-1723-05-01-Estella Chastaigne Arrived in the Maryland Colony

The Julian Calendar was in use by the Maryland colonists in 1723 when Estella Chastaigne arrived in the tobacco port of Benedict Town on the Patuxent River. This was on the first of May, according to the Julian Calendar then in use there, 11 days before the date we currently recognize. Therefore, the spring migration of birds to the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland was at its absolute peak, blocking out the sun at times. This magnificent sight from the bow of Captain Robyn Mann’s schooner, the Osprey, was Estella’s first impression of the place, along with the deep verdant smell of the forest that permeated the salt air far from shore.
